Sinopsys: The story is set during the Restoration, a period whose prevailing values are hypocrisy, ostentation and money. This is the society in which Antoinette de Navarreins, a Parisian coquette and wife of the Duke of Langeais, has come of age. From their very first meeting, General Armand de Montriveau falls madly in love with her, pledging his eternal passion, a sentiment encouraged by the Duchess. The latter, flattered by so much desire and caught up in her high-society games, toys with seducing him but does not concede her charms. Montriveau vainly attempts to win irrefutable evidence of her love, but Antoinette hypocritically declines on religious grounds. During a ball, as Montriveau's eyes linger on her neck, he speaks of his most vivid memory of Westminster. "Do not touch the Executioner's Axe", he was told by a guard who showed him the blade that severed King Charles I's head. Montriveau, aware that the Duchess only plays with him and will never capitulate, decides to ignore her and plan his revenge... ...
