Trama: Ci troviamo in Inghilterra a Hutton Bushel, una cittadina dello Yorkshire. Come in tutte le cittadine inglesi anche qui troviamo una chiesa, un cimitero, un ristorante indiano e una scuola. Il direttore della scuola è Toby Teasdale e la vice direttrice e Irene Pridworthy. Toby è sposato con Celia: la figlia di Josephine Hamilton, ben conosciuta per la sua discrezione. L'estate è alle porte e mentre nella casa di Celia sono tutti indaffarati per le pulizie di primavera, lei sta passeggiando nel giardino, si ferma un momento, sospira, afferra il pacchetto delle sigarette per prenderne una, ma esita. Deve cedere alla tentazione? Data questa premessa-pretesto, la storia si sviluppa contemplando le varianti ed i rocamboleschi intrecci tratti dalle otto commedie di Alan Ayckbourn intitolate "Intimate exchanges". L'intrigo viene svolto con differenti possibilità per ognuno dei due film. Dalla scelta fondamentale di Celia di fumare o di non fumare deriveranno biforcazioni successive che porteranno ad incontri e a destini differenti da lì a cinque anni. Ad esempio, fumare significherà poter udire un personaggio che suona alla porta: non fumare condurrà Celia all'altro capo del suo giardino, non sentirà il campanello: un altro uomo ed un altro incontro la attendono. Il tutto tra la tragedia, la farsa ed il dramma.
Sinopsys: The setting is England, in the Yorkshire township of Hutton Buyshell. As in all English towns there is a church, a cemetery, an Indian restaurant and a school. The principal of the school is Toby Teasdale and the deputy principal is Irene Pridworthy. Toby is married to Celia, the daughter of Josephine Hamilton who is known for her discretion. The summer is approaching, and Celia takes a stroll in the garden while everyone is busy inside with the spring cleaning. She stops for a moment and sighs. She takes out a packet of cigarettes and reaches for one. But she hesitates. Will she give in to temptation? Building from this premise, the story develops by examining the various surprising entanglement of eight Alan Ayckbourn comedies entitled "Intimate Exchanges". Even different possibilities are explored in each of the two films. From Celia's fundamental decision to smoke or not to smoke, the story branches off in radically different directions, ranging from tragedy to farce to drama and taking in encounters and destinies that occupy a five-year time span. For example, lighting her cigarette allows Celia to hear what a character is saying on the other side of the door. The decision not to smoke takes her to the opposite end of the garden, where she fails to hear the doorbell, signaling that another man and another encounter await her. |
