Trama: Un giomo Nelly, una ragazza parigina di 25 anni, in un caffé, fa la conoscenza con M. Arnaud, I'attempato ex fidanzato della sua amica Jacqueline. Da vero gentiluomo, M. Amaud si offre di pagare l'affitto arretrato di Nelly, senza condizioni né clausole. Inizia cosi una singolare relazione tra M. Arnaud e Nelly, che intanto ha chiesto il divorzio da Jérome, un marito pelandrone che viveva alle sue spalle. Arnaud ha offerto a Nelly un lavoro: battere a macchina le memorie della sua singolare carriera di magistrato. Di tanto intanto la ragazza si ferma per commentare e dare suggerimenti. Nonostante la grande differenza di età, Arnaud ne rimane affascinato e tenta discretamente di sedurla. Intanto Nelly conosce Vincent, l'editore del libro che sta battendo a macchina. Vincent ne è attratto e il suo interesse viene ricambiato sino a che una notte vivono un appassionato incontro d'amore. La collaborazione tra Arnaud e Nelly si interrompe. Nel frattempo Vincent propone alla ragazza di andare a vivere con lui: lei affemma di essere felice cosi e di non voler cambiare le cose. Vincent si infuria e rompe la relazione. Nelly, sconvolta, va da Arnaud, che le mette a disposizione la stanza degli ospiti. Il giomo dopo arriva Lucie, la moglie separata di Arnaud, depressa perché ha appena perduto il suo compagno. Più tardi Arnaud chiama Nelly chiedendole di andare immediatamente da lui perché è in partenza per gli Stati Uniti insieme con Lucie, per andare a trovare il loro figlio. Le affida l'ultima parte del manoscritto perché lo porti all'editore. Per salutarsi, Nelly e Arnaud si abbracciano per la prima e l'ultima volta.
Sinopsys: In a cafe one day, a 25-year-old Parisian girl Nelly, meets Mr. Arnaud, the elderly ex-fiance of her friend Jacqueline. Like a true gentleman, Mr. Arnaud offers to pay Nelly's overdue rent, imposing no conditions or stipulations. The encounter marks the beginning of a singular relationship between Mr. Arnaud and Nelly. She, in the meantime, has requested a divorce from her layabout husband Jerome, whom she has been forced to support. Arnaud offers Nelly a job typing his memoirs, the recollections of his colorful career as a magistrate. Every so often, the young woman stops to offer suggestions. The large age difference between them notwithstanding, Arnaud is drawn to her and discreetly sets about trying to seduce her. Meanwhile, Nelly meets Vincent, the editor of the book she is typing. He is immediately attracted to her and the interest is mutual, culminating in a night of passion. Nelly's collaboration with Arnaud is interrupted and during that break, Vincent suggests she go and live with him. But she insists she is happy the way things are and has no desire to change. infuriated, Vincent puts an end to their relationship. Nelly is distraught and goes to see Arnaud, who puts her up in his guestroom. The following day, Arnaud's ex-wife Lucie arrives feeling depressed after a romantic bust-up. A little later, Arnaud calls Nelly, informing her that he and Lucie are leaving immediately for the United States to visit their son. He entrusts her with the final part of the manuscript, instructing her to deliver it to his editor. As they say their good-byes, Nelly and Mr. Arnaud embrace for the first and last time.
