Trama: La stretta intimità del funerale di un caro amico segna l'inizio di questa saga che comprende sessant'anni di storia italiana. La storia chiude un cerchio come la vita stessa e come le vite di Guido e Andrea, uniti non solo dalla loro lunga amicizia ma anche da una donna che entrambi amano...grande è questa amicizia che durerà fino alla morte. Quando Andrea ritorna dal funerale di Guido è travolto dai ricordi e la sua memoria torna alle ultime settimane drammatiche del 1944 in cui i Nazisti si ritiravano dalla Toscana. Guido veniva fatto prigioniero dalla Resistenza per via delle sue idee filo-fasciste. Sua moglie, Nives corre da Andrea in cerca d'aiuto. Quest'ultimo è uno psichiatra che riesce a trattenere Guido in ospedale. Guido infatti è in una disperata condizione fisica e mentale, al limite della pazzia, ed è solamente con l'aiuto di Andrea che con i ricordi in comune riuscirà a riportarlo in sé. Le vite dei tre restano unite nonostante rimangano separati per molti anni. Nives, innamorata di entrambi si trova a dover affrontare la complessità della libertà e l'onestà di essere donna.
Sinopsys: The intense intimacy of a best friend's funeral marks the opening of this saga which spans sixty years of Italy's history. The story turns a full circle, like life itself, like the lives of Guido and Andrea, bound not only by their fierce lifelong friendship, but also by a woman they both love... It is a friendship which will last until death. As Andrea returns from his best friend Guido's funeral he is overcome by a flood of memories and plunged into the final dramatic weeks of the 1944 Nazi retreat from Tuscany. Guido has been taken prisoner by the resistance fighters and is going to be executed for his Fascist leanings. His wife Nives rushes to Andrea for help. He is a psychiatrist and manages to keep Guido in hospital. Guido, in fact, is in a desperate mental and physical condition, bordering on madness, and it is only by tracing their shared memories of their lives that Andrea can bring him back to health. The lives of the three friends remain entwined, but they do not see each other until many years later. And Nives, torn between the love of both men, faces the complexities of freedom and honesty as a woman.
