Trama: E' l'anno 1967. Chow Mo-wan ritorna a Hong Kong, una città molto diversa da quella che Chow conosceva quando aveva visto Su Li-zhen per l'ultima volta. Si dice che sia divorziata. Chow la cerca, ma Su non si trova. Per sbarcare il lunario, scrive romanzi a puntate. Sceglie di vivere in alberghi di terza categoria. Quando può, sceglie di dormire nella stanza numero 2046, il numero di stanza che era stata sua e di Su. Comincia a scrivere il suo primo romanzo di fantascienza. La storia è ambientata nell'anno 2046. I nomi dei paesi ormai non esistono più. Le città sono identificate soltanto con numeri in codice. Il 2046 è una città futuristica che in qualche modo è rimasta miracolosamente paralizzata nel tempo. I personaggi vanno nei luoghi che lui ha visto. Sfogano emozioni che lui tiene sepolte dentro il cuore. Aveva amato Su ma era stato troppo discreto per dirglielo. Arriva per posta un invito a un matrimonio. Gli dicono che parteciperà anche Su. Come sarà rivederla?
Sinopsys: The year is 1967. Chow Mo-wan returns to Hong Kong, a city very different from the one he knew back when he saw Su Li-zhen the last time. Word is that she has gotten divorced. Chow seeks her out, but Su is nowhere to be found. To make a living, Chow writes serialised novels. He chooses to live in third-class hotels. When he can, he sleeps in room number 2046, the same room number he once had with Su. He starts to write his first science fiction novel. The story is set in the year 2046. Countries no longer have names. Towns and cities are identified with nothing but code numbers. 2046 is a futuristic city that has been miraculously frozen in time. The characters go places that Chow has seen. They give vent to emotions that he has buried deep inside his heart. He loved Su, but he was too guarded to tell her. A wedding invitation comes for him in the mail. People say that Su will be there, too. What will it be like to see her again?
