Trama: Massimo a quattordici anni ha rinunciato al linguaggio normale e da allora non ha più parlato. Egli non è affatto muto, parla soltanto quando recita, dimostrando di essere un grande attore. Tutti vogliono riportarlo alla normalità, il Padre, la Madre, il fratello Carlo, la moglie del fratello Anna, la fidanzatina, ognuno usando le proprie arti, i propri trucchi, per costringere il ragazzo a svelarsi, a parlare di sé. Ma è tutto inutile: Massimo non vuole parlare e nessuno lo piegherà, egli è come un neonato e rivendica questo stato tacendo, senza dare una spiegazione, proprio perché si tratterebbe soltanto di una spiegazione cosciente. La persecuzione dei "normali" esplode in un terribile terremoto nell'isola di Creta, dove la famiglia si è riunita sotto la tenda del Padre, insigne archeologo. Il terremoto lascia tutti vivi, come una violenta crisi di follia che passa e apre il varco alla speranza, al cambiamento.
Sinopsys: This film tells the story of Massimo, a boy who doesn't talk. At the age of fourteen he gave up using normal language and hasn't spoken at all since them. In reality Massimo, who's around twenty at the time the story takes place, isn't mute at all. He speaks only when on stage, and is a great actor. Massimo has a splendid voice, but outside the theater he lives and expresses himself in silence. One day, a director sees him play the Prince of Homburg and is fascinated. He wants to offer a big part of Massimo. But when the director receives no reply (he doesn't understand the young man's silence) he turns to Massimo's father, an archeologist who informs the director about his son's choice not to talk and offers a possible explanation: perhaps it was a disappointment in love. The director changes his mind: now he wants to put on a play about Massimo, to make him into a great character, to interpret himself. He asks Massimo's mother, an author, to write the text. At first she hesitates, but then accepts. Why? Maybe to force her son to talk about himself, and to break down his obstinate coherence. But no. Even though Massimo is playing the part of himself, he's hesitant b make it an autobiographical experience in the anecdotal-realistic sense. Al the characters in "The Butterfly s Dream" try in different ways to make Massimo talk to render him normal. Herein lies the film's central theme: the insidiousness of normalization; the subtle pressure b conform. The "persecution" by the normal characters explodes at the end of the film in a terrible earthquake on the isle of Crete, where the entire family is united around the father in the archeologist's tent. But even though it's terrible, the earthquake leaves them al alive, like a violent crisis of insanity that passes and opens a way towards hope, and change.
